SIR FRANCIS OTTIWELL ADAMS: letterbook of Sir Francis Ottiwell Adams (b.1826, d.1889), as Minister ad interim in Paris, in the absence of the Ambassador, Lord Lyons; March-Sept. 1878, May 1880, July-October 1880, April 1881, July-Sept. 1881. Mostly drafts and copies. Partly printed. Partly French. The letterbook contains Adams's secret and private correspondence, principally with successive Foreign Secretaries, on issues such as the Conference of Berlin, Balkan frontiers, French influence in Tunisia and commercial questions. Adams annotated some of the letters in red ink after 1882. The letterbook was sold with other material by or collected by Adams at Phillips's sale, 7 June 1984, lot 655. Purchased from Burgess Browning, Sales List April 1987, item 53.
