TULSE HILL: 'Plan of the Copyhold Estate situate [in] Norwood Lane known as Pages otherwise Sages Meadow in the Parish of Lambeth in the County of Surrey. The Property of John Lett Esq. of Dulwich, Surrey. From actual survey taken by H. H. Russell. Surveyor 1 Freemans Court, Cornhill'; 10 Aug. 1843. Scale [1:528]. Scale bar of 10 chains (= 15 inches). The field depicted is now covered by Deronda, Romola, Deerbrook and Berwyn Roads, SE 24. John Lett was probably a member of a family of timber merchants that had been building in Lambeth since 1812 (see V.C.H. Surrey, (1905), vol. ii, p. 250). H. H. Russell is not recorded in P. Eden (ed.), Dictionary of land surveyors and local cartographers of Great Britain and Ireland 1550-1850 (Folkestone, 1975-1979). The plan was annotated in red soon after completion to show new roads and houses. West at top. The title cartouche and table of contents take the form of a title deed tied with red tape, drawn in trompe l'oeil, and they are adorned with illustrations of a compass, rule, etc. Purchased from Roger Mason, Aug. 1987.
Ink and watercolour on paper lined with linen. 615 x 785mm.
