DARLINGTON QUAKERS: 'Plan of property belonging to the Friends in the Township of Darlington in the County of Durham. 1849/ J. Sowerby. Surveyor. Darlington'; 1849. Scale [1:3168]. Scale bar of 30 chains (= 7.5 inches). The plan contains watercolour views of St Cuthbert's Church, of the Friends' Meeting House and of the principal Quaker residences (i.e. Feethams, North Lodge and Bushel Hill). Tables identify the major religious and secular institutions and give the ownership and the acreages of the estates owned by members of the Pease and Backhouse families. The religious and secular establishments and the different estates are distinguished by colour washes. J. Sowerby is not included in P. Eden (ed.), Dictionary of land surveyors and local cartographers of Great Britain and Ireland 1550-1850 (Folkestone, 1975-1979). Purchased at Phillips's, 17 Sept. 1987, lot 485.
