LANCASHIRE COAL MINES: 'A map of the manors forests &c within the Honor of Clitheroe belonging to their graces Henry Duke of Buccleuch and Elizabeth Dutchess of Buccleuch his wife into which the several coal leases granted by them extend shewing not only the boundaries and extents of those manors &c respectively but the boundaries and extents of the several districts comprised in the respective leases'; 1809-1810. 'Surveyed between the years 180[9] & 1810 under the superintendence of Ralph Fletcher Esq.re by Thomas Bartley.' Scale [1:21120]. Scale bar of 3 miles (= 9 inches). The plan depicts the manors of Coln, Ightenhill, Accrington, and Tottington and the wappentake of Blackburn. North-west at top. Coloured to distinguish freehold, glebe and copyhold land, and manorial, town, forest and coal district, etc., boundaries. Coal pits working in 1809 and unoccupied waterfalls are indicated. The plan also shows some geological features (e.g. faults). Relief indicated by shading. Tables give the ownership, type of tenure and acreages of the manorial lands, the lessees and locations of the coal mines, details on the unoccupied waterfalls, the ecclesiastical divisions and the number of men ballotted for the local militia between the ages of eighteen and thirty in 1809. Ralph Fletcher and Thomas Bartley are recorded in Peter Eden (ed.), Dictionary of land Surveyors and local cartographers of Great Britain and Ireland 1550-1850 (Folkestone, 1975-1979). The Lancashire Record Office has a related plan. Purchased from J. H. Rendall, Esq., Sept. 1987.
