EDWARD TOWNSEND: diary and letters; 1819-1824. Townsend became an ensign in the 75th Regiment in 1818. In 1841 he was promoted to the army rank of major in the 83rd Regiment, attaining the regimental rank in 1848. He died between May 1851 and June 1852. For maps apparently by a Captain Townsend of the 83rd Regiment (probably the same), see Add. 63746. Purchased from Burgess Browning, Bulletin No. 3, item 77, 3 Feb. 1977.
Paper; ff. ii+41. 313 x 198mm. The diary has an old vellum cover preserved separately. It is badly damp-stained, with some loss of text.
1. ff. 1-33. Diary of Ensign Edward Townsend; 26 May 1819-30 Jan. 1824, mostly written while serving in Gibraltar with the 75th Regiment. The diary contains details of the 1820 constitutionalist revolution in Spain, with numerous references to its leader, Col. Rafael Riego (executed 7 Nov. 1823), and to the French intervention in Spain in 1823.
