Title:

COKE PAPERS (SERIES I) Correspondence and papers of Sir John Coke, Secretary of State to King Charles I; 1551-1644. Partly drafts. Partly Latin, French and Italian. The papers cover all aspects of Coke's official career, as manager (1591-1593) of the estates of Sir Fulke Greville, Deputy-Treasurer (1599-1604) and later (1621-1636) Commissioner of the Navy, Master of Requests (1622-1625), Member of Parliament (1621-1629) and Secretary of State (1625-1639). Also included are letters and papers relating to his family and domestic life, household accounts for Melbourne Hall, co. Derby and elsewhere, and notes of personal expenditure. The papers are extensively calendared in H.M.C. 12th Report (1888), Appendix, Part 1, and Part 2, pp. 1-342, where the names of writers, etc., are indexed. The present arrangement corresponds with the H.M.C. order, although several of the larger items have been gathered together into the final volume (Add. 64924) for convenience of binding, and several others appear to have gone missing since 1888. Formerly held by the Derbyshire Record Office which assigned its own bundle and item numbers. This collection served as the basis for Michael B. Young's Servility and service: the life and work of Sir John Coke, Royal Historical Society, Studies in History Series, no. 45 (1986). Series II of the Coke Papers is Add. 69868-69935, and Series III Add. 69936-69998. Purchased from the Marquess of Lothian, with the aid of grants from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, The Shaw Fund and the Pilgrim Trust, 14 July 1987.
