JAMES PAPERS: papers of Major Charles James (b.1758, d.1821) author, military entrepreneur and spy; 1795, 1816-1818. Partly French. These papers do not appear to have been among the James Papers sold at Sotheby's, 18 Dec. 1986, lot 287. Purchased (ff. 1-54) from Stride & Son, Chichester, 4 Feb. 1988, lot 123 and (ff. 55-100v) from D. P. White of Rusper, Horsham, Cat. 1988, no. 167, 28 April 1988.

1. ff. 1-54. Miscellaneous papers as military agent to the emigré forces in England; 1795. Relating to the feeding and clothing of the forces after the abortive landing at Quibéron Bay (1795), and also in part to the mustering and re-equipping of French troops for the Ile d'Yeu expedition (1795). Including lists of the officers, men, servants and priests to be assisted, and letters and memorials from emigré leaders such as the Marquis du Dresnay.
2. ff. 55-100v. Letters to James, mostly from Henry Morris, relating to the importation of Napoleonic medals from France; 1816-1818. Together with an annotated copy of Monnaie des Médailles and Médaillons par Andrieu, Graveur, à Paris, bound as one pamphlet (London, n.d.).
