PSALTER OF JOHN TAUNTON: psalter in Latin, made for use at Glastonbury Abbey, co. Som.; circa 1400. The calendar (ff. 1-6v) includes feasts and gradings appropriate to Glastonbury (see F. Wormald 'The Liturgical Calendar of Glastonbury Abbey', in Festschrift Bernhard Bischoff (Stuttgart, 1971) pp. 325-345), and Sts Indractus, Dunstan, Aidan, Patrick and Benignus are invoked in the litany, ff. 221-226. The Office of the Dead, with (ff. 245v-249) associated noted versicles and responds, occurs at the end of the manuscript, ff. 234-249. At f. 245 the name 'Jon Taunton M.G.' is calligraphically written within a scroll, apparently by the original scribe. Armorial bookplate of John Peacock, 19th cent., f. i. At f. iii verso a list of contents in a [17th-cent?] hand, also responsible for the press-mark 'Q. 3. 25' at f. 1 and for an inaccurate ink foliation 1-243. Belonged in 1859 to Rev. Thomas Hugo, F.S.A., see Somerset Archaeological Proceedings, ix (1859), p. 80. Owned, according to Christie's sale-cat., by John W. Jones (b.1828, d.1895) who acquired it in 1879. Upholland College MS. 98, see N. Ker, Medieval Libraries of Great Britain (second ed., 1964), p. 91. A label numbered '98' is pasted to the upper cover. Purchased at Christie's, 2 Dec. 1987, lot 20.
Vellum and (f. i) paper; ff. iii+253. 108 x 75mm. 19th-cent. binding of brown calf, elaborately blind-tooled and part gilt.
