A marriage grant from Ludovico Maria Sforza ('il Moro'), duke of Milan, to his wife, Beatrice d'Este, daughter of Ercole I, duke of Ferrara, of lands in the territories of Novara, Pavia, and Milan, incipit: 'In nomine domini nostri Iesu Christi anno natalis eius millesimo quatringentesimo nonagesimo quarto die martis vigesimo octavo Ianuarii'.
Decoration:
Partial border in colours and gold with motifs all'antica and portraits of Ludovico il Moro and his wife, Beatrice d'Este, with their arms impaled and supported by two putti, badges and mottoes.
The illumination is attributed to Giovan Pietro Birago.

Script: Humanistic. Written by Stephanus Guspertus of Cremona, notary and ducal chancellor, his colophon: 'Ego Stephanus Guspertus cremonensis D. Pauli civis mediolanensis ill[ustrissi]morum et ex[cellentissi]morum principum D. Ioannis Galeaz Marie Sfortie Vicecomitis Mediolani Ducis ac p[rincip]i domini Ludovici eius patri uti patris cancellarius ac publicus imperatoria auctoritate notarius (...) instrumentum confeci et scripsi in hancq[ue] publicam formam redegi. Et qui diligenter collatum originali sceda concordare inveni. Ideo etiam propria manu mea scripsi signumque mei notariatus apposui consuetum in fidem et testimonium omnium premissorum'.

Ludovico Maria Sforza 'il Moro' (b. 1452, d. 1508), duke of Bari and subsequently Milan (from 1495): includes a marriage grant from him to his wife (married in 1491) Beatrice d'Este (b. 1475, d. 1497), duchess of Bari and subsequently Milan, dated 28 January 1494, and signed by the duke.
William Young Ottley (b. 1771, d. 1836), writer on art and collector, keeper of prints and drawings at the British Museum: acquired from him by Samuel Rogers (see Catalogue of the Very Celebrated Collection of Works of Art: The Property of Samuel Rogers Esq.
