Anthony Anthony, ‘The second Rolle declaryng the Nombre of the Kynges Maiestys owne Galliasses’. A visual record of all the ships in Henry’s navy at the end of his life, interspersed with a list of their seamen and armaments. This roll shows the galleasses (heavily armed three-masted galleys).

Origin:
England. One of three rolls presented to Henry VIII in 1546 by Anthony Anthony, an official of the ordnance.
Provenance:
The other two rolls, which depict the warships, pinnaces and row barges, were bound in one volume after Charles II gave them to Samuel Pepys. The Pepys volume is now in the Pepys Library in Magdalene College, Cambridge.
Lady Mary Fox (b. 1798, d. 1864). Purchased by the British Museum 23 May 1857.

Description from Catalogue of Additions to the Manuscripts in the British Museum, 1854–1860:
‘"THE second Rolle declaryng the Nombre of the Kynges Maiestys owne Galliasses;" with coloured drawings of the vessels and statements of their crews and armament. At the end of the roll is written "Youre Mates humble and poure seruant. Par me. Anthony Anthony" [1546]. It was in the possession of Samuel Pepys, Secretary to the Admiralty in the reign of Charles II.; and the first roll still forms part of his library at Cambridge. Vellum roll; 16 ft. 8 in. x 2 ft. 4 in.’
