'EARLY ENGLISH POEMS and prose treatises, transcribed about 1380-1400, and closely agreeing with portions of the somewhat earlier Vernon MS. in the Bodleian Library. The volume is very imperfect, and at present consists of only 172 leaves; 177 are wanting at the beginning, and 30 in the middle, and it is incomplete at the end. The verse is in three columns, the prose in two. The contents are: 1. A series of Gospel stories in verse, each headed with the opening Latin words from the Vulgate, and most of them illustrated by monkish legends. Imperfect at the beginning. The first words here are, "Whuche synne made vs alle Out of vre hous to falle." The first Latin text is, "Surgens Ihesus de synagoga," and the first legend begins, "A goode lyte tale here lys Of a wommon that hiht Tays," f. 1.

2. Verses on the seven deadly sins, the Ten Commandments, etc.; translated from the Speculum Ecclesiœ of St. Edmund of Pontigny, Archbishop of Canterbury, 1233-1240. They begin: "In nome of hym alweldyng," f. 30 b.

3. St. Paul's Vision, of the seven pains of Hell. Verse; beginning, Lusteneth lordynges leof and dere." Imperfect from the 124th line, f. 32 b.

4. The Mirror of Life: a poem generally attributed to William of Nassyngton, and founded on "La Somme des vices et des vertus," of which there were two English prose translations in the XIVth century, the one described under Art. 21 of this volume, the other known under the title, "Ayenbite of Inwyt," represented in a couplet at the end of the present poem: "Prikke of conciens hette this book Whoso wol may rede and look." Imperfect at the beginning, f. 33.

5. "The meditacion of Ihesu Cristes fyue woundes:" in prose, f. 61 b.
