Letters and songs, in the handwriting of Robert Burns; containing 174 items. The first nine consist of letters and fragments of letters of Burns addressed to James Johnson, engraver, of Edinburgh, in 1788-1794: these are followed by 162 songs, a few of them not in Burns''s handwriting, which with three exceptions appeared in Johnson''s Scots'' Musical Museum, Vols. II.-V. After the songs is a coarse poem, entitled Libel Summons, dated 4 June, 1786. lastly, there are two letters of Burns; the one addressed to Lady Winifred Maxwell Constable; Ellisland, 25 Apr. 1791; and the other to "David Mr Culloch, Esq., Ardwell Gatehouse;" Dumfries, 21 June, 1794. The songs here transcribed by Burns are many of them not his own, though for the most part altered by him. Several have remarks appended to them.
