This manuscript contains works by the Mallorcan philosopher and theologian, Raymond Lull (b. 1232, d. 1315), translated from Catalan to Castilian Spanish:

ff. 1r-85v: Raymond Lull, El libro del Gentil y de los Tres Sabios in four books, a debate on belief and the existence of God between a Jew, a Christian and a Muslim. This Spanish version translated from the Catalan was completed by Gonçalo Sanches de Useda of Cordoba on Monday 29 March 'era 1416' (= 1378 AD), according to the colophon.

ff. 86r-111r: Raymond Lull, Coment del dictat, a collection of moral couplets with a gloss, translated from Catalan and completed at Barcelona in 1399.

ff. 111v-112v: Flores Sancti Bernardi, book 10, chapter 18, probably translated from the original Latin (see Taylor, 'Flores' (1990) for a transcription of the text).

One scribe copied the first text (ff. 1r-85v) and a second scribe copied the remainder (ff. 86r-112v).

ff. 113r-114r: An added exemplum, 'Exenplo que acaescio en tierra de Damaso a la buena Duenna Climecia con su hija Climesta que avia veynte annos a la ?mecia en cuna' (see Taylor, 'An Old Spanish Tale' (1996) for a transcription of the text).

Decoration

Five colour-wash tree diagrams of the virtues and vices (ff. 1v-3v), with a crowned female figure on a tethered horse ('la duena de Inteligencia') addressed by a Christian doctor ('Xpiano') (f. 1v) and three figures in robes representing a Jew ('Judio') debating with a Muslim ('Moro') and a Gentile ('Gentil') who is holding a staff (f. 2r). Initials in red or blue with pen-flourishing in the other colour. Rubrics, initials, running titles and paraphs in red.

Provenance:

Alfonso Ferandes de Ferrera , a colophon on f. 112v states 'Este libro mando trasladar Alfonso Ferandes de Ferrera a Andre Ferandes a xxviii^ode junio anno de m^occcc^o vj: annos se acabo en el dicho dia e a anno en la carçel' (This book was copied (?translated) by Andre Fernandes at the command of Alfonso Fernandes de Ferrera on the 28th June 1406). This colophon probably refers to the part copied by the second scribe (ff. 86r-112v) which may have been added to ff. 1-85 by Ferandes, whose address in Seville is given on f. 1r (see Taylor, 'Old Spanish Translation' (1990), p. 58).

Fernando Columbus (Hernando Colón), bibliophile and son of Christopher Columbus (b. 1488, d. 1539), his ownership mark and the note, 'Este libro costo en Sevilla 34 maravedis.... Esta registrado 2999' (f. 114v).

Juan de Chaves Chacón, 11th Count de Miranda del Castañar (b. 1643, d. 1696), in his library: a label pasted to the recto of a front flyleaf (f i);

13th Count de Miranda del Castañar, in his library: shelfmark 35 in his inventory of books of 1755.

The Spanish Royal Library (now Madrid, Biblioteca Nacional), bought by them in March 1757; their shelfmark X. 145, as described by Felix Torres Amat in a later bibliography of 1836.

Juan de Iriarte (b. 1702, d. 1771), Spanish Royal Librarian, in his library, according to the British Museum accessions register.

Obadiah Rich, US Diplomat (b. 1783, d. 1850), the Iriarte library was bought by him between 1823 and 1829 (see Nigel Glendinning, 'Spanish Books in England, 1800-1850' Transactions of the Cambridge Bibliographical Society 3 (1959-63), 79-92 (pp. 79-80, 86)).

Thomas Thorpe, bookseller of London, he sold 117 volumes of the Iriarte collection to Thomas Rodd on 5 June 1826.

Thomas Rodd the younger, bookseller, bought from him by the British museum on 11th March, 1843.
