Scope & Content:

Diaries, including photographs, correspondence, financial notes and newscuttings, of Sir Henry Hesketh Joudou Bell, G.C.M.G., (b. 1864, d. 1952), colonial administrator; 1890-1952, n.d. Sir Hesketh served on the Gold Coast from 1890; in the Bahamas from 1894; in Dominica from 1899; as commissioner and then governor of the Uganda Protectorate from 1906; as governor of Northern Nigeria from 1909; as governor of the Leeward Islands from 1912; and as governor of Mauritius from 1916 until his retirement in 1924. His diaries for 1899-1909 were partly published in 'Glimpses of a Governor's Life: from Diaries Letters and Memoranda' (1946). Many entries are in the form of carbon copies of letters to relatives; diary volumes from the Mauritius period onwards are largely typewritten. Some pages and passages have been excised by the writer, who compiled three further volumes of synopsis and abstracts covering the years 1890-1940 and an index volume for the years 1899-1938, n.d., in which the later years are not covered in great detail. Sir Hesketh first presented his diaries to the Department of Manuscripts in 1940. Subsequent volumes were added to the collection, but volumes were also temporarily withdrawn for the purposes of authorship. The synopsis volume for 1925-1940 was received from the Royal Commonwealth Society in 1968. The collection was reserved for fifty years from the date of Sir Hesketh's death. Further correspondence and papers of Sir Hesketh are held in the Royal Commonwealth Society collections at Cambridge University Library.
