MIDGLEY, W.R., CO. YORK. ‘An Accurate Plan of the Manour of Midgley, Being one of the Lordships Belonging to James Farrer Esqr. Survey’d in 1764 per Robert Whitworth’; 1764. Scale: 6 statute chains to the inch [1:4752], with graticule of furlongs. West at top. Detailed map with tenure and tenants, acreages, common land, manor boundaries, roads, bridges and ditches, and neighbouring parishes and townships. Many thumbnail sketches of settlements in the manor. Keys to land adjoining the common, to the place names and land owners of places marked on the map, and to the houses and owners in Midgley town.. This is the earliest surviving original estate map by the canal surveyor and engineer Robert Whitworth (b.1734, d.1799) [Eden/Bendall W.324]. The map shows land owned or leased by Whitworth’s brother, William. The map has suffered some damage at the lower right- and left-hand corners resulting in some loss of detail. For Robert Whitworth see most recently Geoffrey Oxley’s article ‘Robert Whitworth (1734-1799): canal engineer of Calderdale’, Local Historian vol. 32, number 1 (2002), pp. 54-63. Purchased from Roderick Barron, Nov. 2002.
Ink and watercolour on paper. 1645 x 750mm.
