Buist was born in 1904 at Woodgaven, Fife and read Russian and German at Glasgow University. In the 1930s he worked on the Dundee 'Courier' and 'Evening Telegraph' and the 'Glasgow Herald'. During the Second World War he was an intelligence officer for the 51st Division (1940-1941) and was later seconded to the War Office. He joined 'The Times' in 1945, and worked as a correspondent in Germany and Canada before becoming Foreign Editor in 1958. He retired in 1964 and died on 27 June 1982. Presented by Mrs C. M. Morton, daughter of J. S. Buist, Oct. 2001.
