78933. Cook (b.1844, d.1926), born in England and brought to Melbourne in 1852, was commissioned by Prince Albert to undertake a series of voyages around Victoria and New Zealand with the aim of producing images for engravings. He studied at the National Gallery of Victoria’s School of Design from 1870-1872, was a founding member of the Victorian Academy of Arts, and in 1872 was awarded a medal for a watercolour at the New South Wales Academy of Arts Exhibition. He returned to England in 1873 and was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy. See Joan Kerr ‘The Dictionary of Australian Artists’ (Melbourne, 1992). Purchased from Mark Irving, December 2002.
