MORGAN ROLL: armorial roll pedigree of Sir William Morgan of Machen and Tredegar, M.P. (d.1653), compiled by Lewis Morris; 1612. The descent is traced in conventional form from Brutus with names in roundels and coloured arms (attributed arms are assigned to the mythical and legendary figures). The compiler has not been further identified, but notes showing local antiquarian knowledge confirm the Welsh origin of the pedigree. At the foot is an elaborate achievement of Sir William's arms and the title in a cartouche: 'This is the Pedigree and achivment of the right worshipfulle Sr William Morgan of Tredegar . . . by me Lewis Morris 1612'. Other Morgan pedigrees of similar date are Harley Rolls Z 20 and CC9. For the Morgan family of Tredegar, see the Dictionary of Welsh Biography (1959). Presented by Mrs Helen Lloyd and incorporated in 1989.
