COKE PAPERS (SERIES II). Correspondence and papers of Sir John Coke, Secretary of State to King Charles I, and of his son Sir John Coke the younger; 1541-1654, n.d. Partly copies and drafts. Partly Latin, French, Italian, Spanish, German and Dutch. These papers supplement Add. 64870-64924 (Series I), with which they closely interrelate. See also Add. 69936-69998 (Series III) below. The present series covers all aspects of Coke's official career as Deputy Treasurer (1599-1604) and later Commissioner (1618-1636) of the Navy, Master of Requests (1622-1625), Member of Parliament (1621-1629) and Secretary of State (1625-1639). It incorporates letters and papers relating to his family and domestic life, household accounts for his various residences and notes of personal expenditure. Also included (Add. MSS 69934, 69935) are some papers of Fulke Greville, 1st Baron Brooke, of whose estates Coke acted for a time as auditor. A few only of these papers are calendared as addenda in the H.M.C. 12th Report, Appendix, Part 3 (1889), pp. 132-155. All items were assigned bundle and item numbers (e.g. C175/1-26) by the Derbyshire County Record Office, but the present arrangement differs considerably from that found in its typewritten list. Purchased, together with Additional Charters 76792-76802, from the Marquess of Lothian, with the aid of grants from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, the Shaw Fund and the Pilgrim Trust, 14 July 1987.
