An anthology of approximately 380 popular tales and fables, used by preachers and others to illustrate moral points. The texts are arranged under subject headings, resembling in this respect the Speculum Laicorum of John of Hoveden (d. 1272-75).
See Herbert, Catalogue of Romances, III, pp. 370-414. In its citation of sources the present manuscript resembles Harley MS 495 (Herbert, Catalogue of Romances, III, p. 534).
Major sources for the collection include Gregory the Great's Dialogues, Cassian's Collationes, Boethius's De Disciplina Scolarium, Cassiodorus's Tripartite History, Eusebius's Historia Ecclesiastica, Bede's Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum, Josephus's Jewish Antiquities, Valerius Maximus, Jerome's Epistles, William of Malmesbury's De Gestis Anglorum (f. 28r), Alexander Neckam's De Naturis Rerum (ff. 19v, 127r) and numerous Vitae. These include extracts from the Lives of St Cuthbert, St Willibrord, St Wilfrid and St Godric.

Horizontal catchwords.
Script: Gothic cursive (cursiva anglicana libraria media), written below the top line.
Binding: Pre-1600. Contemporary binding of bevelled oak boards, laced on to three split cords, covered with kermes-dyed pink leather (damaged) and with remains of a single strap and pin clasping mechanism.
