SIR WILLIAM HAYWARD al. HAWARD, OF TANDRIDGE: miscellaneous genealogical, heraldic and historical collections; temp. William I [between 1066-1087-circa 1647. Autograph. Partly imperfect. Partly Latin and French. Hayward, who was knighted in 1643 and sold his family seat of Tandridge Hall, co. Surr., in 1681, was Gentleman Pensioner to every sovereign from Charles I to Queen Anne, whom in May 1704, when aged almost ninety, he petitioned for relief. This volume, which like most of his antiquarian collections is transcribed in his distinctive bold script, may have been compiled circa 1677-1684. Its sources include manuscripts (see notes on ff. 89v, 91v) then or now in the College of Arms, including collections formed by Robert Cooke, Clarenceux King of Arms (ff. 70-72v, 82-84, 90v, 91), by Robert Glover, Somerset Herald (ff. 29v-100 passim), and by Augustine Vincent, Windsor Herald (ff. 68v, 69). For further transcripts by Hayward among the Harleian collection see MSS. 391, 4785, 4786, 4809, 6016, 6025, 6166, 6193, 6266 and 6829; and cf. also Sloane 841. Purchased in 1697, with twenty-six other manuscripts and books of Hayward, by John, Baron Somers (d. 1716): cf. entry as 'Shirley MS: being a copie of old pedigrees' in Bodleian MS. Rawl. D. 888, f. 41b verso, by Le Neve, who described it at greater length in Harley 7191, ff. 103v-104v. See also Somers's numbering and press-mark 'An. & Her. 13 4 X. 9' in ink inside front cover (f. i). Owned, before 1741, by Edward Harley, 2nd Earl of Oxford, whose autograph inscription 'Oxford. BH', occurs on first page of text (f. 26). Passed (see pencil note inside front cover, f. i), with other acquisitions of Rev. George Harbin (d.1743), librarian to Thomas Thynne, 1st Viscount Weymouth, whose occasional borrowings from the collection were noted by Humphrey Wanley (see Wanley's Diary, ed. C. E. Wright (1966), passim), to the diplomat Sir Alexander Malet, 2nd Bart., from whom it was purchased in 1831 by Sir Thomas Phillipps. His bookstamp with Phillipps number 4833 and pencilled press-mark 'a b. 102' occur inside the front cover (f. i). Purchased at Sotheby's, Phillipps sale, 26 June 1974, lot 2935.
Paper; ff. ii+212. Pagination of written text by Hayward runs from 1 to 156 for first section (ff. 26-103v) and from 1 to 32 for second (ff. 132-162) which, from soiled state of opening recto, appears to have stood alone for some time before incorporation in present binding. Later pagination, extending as far as p. 267 (f. 163) and including intervening blanks (ff. 104-131v), in hand of Peter Le Neve (d. 1729), Norroy King of Arms, who also added list of contents on ff. 3-4v (cf. others in Harley 6016 and 6166) which carries at head later note in pencil '? St George MSS'. Preceding page (f. 1) carries shorter list copied in different hand of similar age, and bears number '(18)' at head. 435mm x 288mm. Leaves arranged in gatherings of four. Pages ruled throughout with single broad margins at all edges in red ink. Watermarked with bunch of grapes and countermarked with compartments enclosing two sets of letters separated by hearts (cf. Harley 6829): 'P A P' variant dated to circa 1665-1671 by Raymond Gaudriault, Filigranes et autres caractéristiques des papiers fabriqués en France aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles (Paris, 1995), p. 304, while 'I M' countermark recorded in 1652 and 1661 (ibid., p. 298). Contemporary binding of rough calf, covers bearing gilt-stamped panel of three rules with single ornaments radiating outwards from the corners, incorporating coat of arms of Hayward within laurel wreath (cf. Sloane 841). Spine, decorated with gilt-tooled ornaments between six raised bands, over-stamped in the 19th century with gilt legend 'SHIRLEY FAMILIA PICKERING FAMILIA CARYE DE CLYVE JURISDICTIO GLASTONIÆ'.
The main contents are as follows:
1. ff. 26-103v. Evidences and pedigrees of various families, with some manorial and monastic records; circa temp. William I-1590. Copies and extracts. The text is largely illustrated with sketches, some of them painted, of coats of arms, seals and coins. Included are:
i. Evidences and pedigrees, etc., of the families of Shirley (ff. 29v-45v, 95v, 96) of Stanton Harold, co. Leic., temp. William I-1581, Pickering (ff. 46-55v) of Oswaldkirk, N.R., co. York, temp. Henry II-circa 1553, and Cliff al. Clive, (ff. 56-69) of Huxley, co. Chest., temp. Henry III-1583. Mostly Latin and French. The Shirley and Clive records are copies of earlier transcripts of documents in possession, respectively, of George Shirley of Stanton Harold in 1581 (cf. College of Arms, Glover MS. 1, ff. 98v-101v, dated 1587), and of George Cliff of Huxley in 1583. For further copies of the evidences, etc., of Shirley see Harley 4023, 4028, 4928 and 6690. A pedigree (ff. 68v, 69) of Cliff attested by William Flower, Norroy King of Arms, and his deputy Robert Glover, Somerset Herald, 1581 (cf. Vincent MS. 120, ff. 102-105), incorporates additions to circa 1647. All include painted coats of arms and seals, including (f. 51) shields 'In fenestra vitrea in aedibus Pickeringicis'.
ii. Pedigrees of English families, partly in narrative form, etc.; circa temp. William I-circa 1583. Mostly Latin. Copies. These partly derive from Visitations, etc., in the College of Arms, some of them from the papers of Robert Cooke (cf. (c) and (d) below with similar material in MS. L. 15) and of Robert Glover (cf. (b) and (k) with Glover MSS. 1, ff. 108-111v, and 2, ff. 12v-19, respectively). Included are pedigrees or descents, with transcripts of charters and painted coats of arms and seals.
iii. Descents of the manors of Harewood, W.R., co. York (ff. 73-74), circa temp. William I-1383, with which cf. College of Arms, Glover MS. 1, ff. 144-147; and of Cockerington, co. Linc. (f. 93), temp. Henry II and n.d. Latin. Copies.
iv. Miscellaneous historical and heraldic collections, drawn largely from earlier writers; circa mid-15th cent.-1590, n.d. Mostly Latin. Partly imperfect. Included are:-
a. ff. 70-72v. Narrative pedigrees relating to titles devolved on Queen Elizabeth I, etc., headed 'R[obert] C[ook] Clarencieux to Mr Secretary Walsingham', beginning 'How the Queenes Matie is heyre to the Dukedome of Normandy, & Kingdome of England by. W. Conqueror'; circa 1573-1590. Imperfect. Cf. College of Arms MS. L. 15, ff. 2-6v.
b. ff. 93v-94v. Anonymous discourse 'De Honore', with reflections on the title of Cancellarius, on 'Proceres' and 'Ordo'; n.d. Latin.
c. ff. 101-103v. Extracts from John Capgrave and John Leland relating to pre-conquest Kings and names of towns and cities of Kent, with some verses (ff. 101v, 103v) by Juvenal and Leland, etc., in Latin; circa 14th-16th cent.
v. Charters, etc., of religious houses in England; circa temp. Stephen-1338, n.d. Copies and extracts. Latin. They relate to the Priory of Walsingham (f. 26), co. Norf., n.d., and the Abbeys of Kirkstead (ff. 27-28v), co. Linc., circa 1139-1226, Titchfield (ff. 78-80v), co. Southt., circa temp. Henry II-1338, and Combermere (f. 92v), co. Chest., n.d., circa 1160-1254.
2. ff. 132-162. 'Secretum Domini' or chartulary and feodary (ff. 137-156) of Walter de Monyngton, Abbot of Glastonbury; circa 1200-1334. Copy. Imperfect. Partly Latin and French. This is separated from the preceding contents by a section (ff. 104-131v) of blank leaves. The manuscript of which it is a partial transcript, Bodleian MS. Wood empt. 1, compiled circa 1340-1342, is in turn a copy of the chartulary now in the possession of the Marquess of Bath that was edited by Dom Aelred Watkin for the Somerset Record Society, vols. LIX, LXIII, LXIV (1947-1949). It may at the time of copying have been in the possession of Ralph Sheldon (d. 1684) of Beoley, who acquired it in 1677 from the Earls of Arundel. In details of presentation, including rubrics and marginal notes, Hayward's transcript attempts to reproduce the appearance of the 'Secretum'.
The various sections are:
i. ff. 132-136v. Miscellaneous matter relating to English and Scottish history, etc., 1291-1301 and n.d., corresponding to ff. 1-4v of the Bodleian MS. Texts pr. in Watkin, ed. cit., vol. I, 1947, Introductory Documents, pp. i-xviii.
ii. ff. 137-144v. 'Kalendare sequentis operis. De Iurisdictione Glastoniae Ecclesiae', with which cf. ff. 5-15 of the Bodleian MS. Text pr. in Notes and Queries for Somerset and Dorset, vol. XII (1911), pp. 273-280, 321-328 and 356-363, and vol. XIII (1913), pp. 41-48, 89-96 and 136-144.
3. ff. 145-148v, 149v-162. Chartulary of Glastonbury Abbey, 1200-1339, n.d. Now imperfect. Cf. ff. 15-28 of the Bodleian MS. Texts printed in Watkin, ed. cit., vol. I, 1947, pp. 1-44, with the exception of some material occuring on ff. 148, 148v and 151v-156, for which see ff. 19v, 19a, 22v-28 of the Bodleian MS.
