Correspondence and papers of Sir Andrew Mitchell, K.B., diplomatist (b.1708, d.1771), with related material; 1695-1847, n.d. Some drafts and cipher. Partly Latin, French and German. Mitchell was Under-Sec. of State for Scotland, 1742-1746, Commissioner to Brussels for negotiation of a commercial treaty with Austria relating to the Netherlands, 1752-1755, and envoy to Prussia, 1756-1771, where he became a friend of Frederick the Great. The papers supplement Add. 6804-6872 and Add. 11260-11262. See A. Bisset, Memoirs and papers of Sir Andrew Mitchell, 2 vols. (1850). Mitchell left his entire estate to his friend Sir Arthur Forbes, 4th Bart., of Craigievar. In 1810 the British Museum purchased Add. 6804-6872 from the Forbes family, while the present collection remained with Sir Arthur Forbes' descendents until 1974. Purchased, with Add. Chs. 75834-75836, from Cecilia Alice, widow of William Francis Forbes-Sempill, 19th Baron Sempill, and her brother-in-law Dr the Hon. Sir Ewen Forbes of Brux, 1 April 1974.
