MACARTNEY PAPERS: official documents and correspondence of George Macartney, 1st Earl Macartney (b.1737, d.1806), Envoy-extraordinary to St. Petersburg, 1764-1767; 1765-circa 1766. Copies. Mostly French. The papers relate to Macartney's negotiation of the commercial treaty between Great Britain and Russia, signed on 20 June 1766. Includes correspondence between Macartney and Count Panin, Russian Minister of State. A table of the contents of the volume appears on folio 206v. References to two manuscripts of the collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps, numbers 13366 and 13421, are written inside the front cover. For further papers of Earl Macartney see Add. 62665. Purchased at Sotheby's, 8 July 1975, lot 3554.
