VITAE PATRVM and a few other lives of saints, in Latin. The MS. originally consisted of artt. 2-7 and 13-24. The missing conclusion of art. 7 with other matter was then added by a contemporary hand, cancelling part of f. 86 and adding artt. 8-12. The prologue to the Vita S. Albani (art. 1) is an Insertion of the end of the 14th cent., and the last leaf of art. 24 and the table of contents are later additions of the latter half of the 15th cent. Contents:-
1. "Incipit prologus super vitam beati Albani martyris": not printed in the editions or included in other MSS. of art. 2, and apparently an interpolation. lt contains no biographical matter. Beg. "Beatissimi preclarissimique martiris Albani vitam ac passionem scripturus non ab re." f. 1 b.
2. "Passio beati Albani martyris": an anonymous life of St. Alban of Mainz. Printed [by Ulrich Zell of Cologne] s. 1. et a. (a copy of this edition is in Royal MS. 12 B. xxiv.). Other MSS. are Royal 13 E. i. and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, 100. Beg. "Erat olim in partibus Aquilonis homo quidam potens," and ends, "super niuem dealbari . amen." f. 2. At the end (f. 5) is scribbled the riddle, "Nate marite [in Royal 12 C. xii., f. 10 b, nepos] frater dixit filio sua mater vere sic erat . soluat quicumque sciat." 3. "Incipit vita sancti Pauli primi heremite a beato Jeronimo edita ad edificacionem posterorurn": one of the lives grouped as liber i. in Rosweyd's Vitae Patrum (Antwerp, 1615), p. 17. In Migne, reprinted in St. Jerome's works, Patr. Lat. xxiii. col. 17. Preface beg. "Inter multos sepe dubitatum," and text "Sub Decio et Valeriano." f. 5 b.
4. "Incipit prologus sancti Jeronimi prespiteri in uitam beati Hylarionis": the Vita S. Hilarionis of St. Jerome (Rosweyd, op. cit. p. 75, Migne, P. L. xxiii. col. 29). Preface beg. "Scripturus uitam beati Hylarionis," and text "Hylarion ortus in uico Tabatha." f. 8.
5. "Narracio sancti Jeronimi presbyteri de captiuo monacho nomine Malcho": the Vita Malchi of the same (Rosweyd, op. cit., p. 93, Migue, P. L. xxiii. col. 53). Preface beg. "Qui navali prelio," and text "Maronias triginta fere milibus." f. 1.5.
6. "Incipit prologus sancti Jeronimi presbyteri in vitam patrum": the Historia Monachorum in Aegypto, translated by Rufinus of Aquileia from a Greek original (see Dom C. Butler, Lausiac History of Palladius, Cambridge Texts and Studies, no. vi. 1898, app. 1), which has been edited by Dr. E. Preuschen, Palladius und Rufinus, 1897 (who, however, supposes it to be derived from the Latin). It is Rosweyd's liber ii., op. cit. p. 449, Patr. Lat. xxi. col. 387. The present text is perturbed in order and omits some of the chapters, the order being as follows (chapters in Migue): Prologue, ch. 1, 15, 16, 12-14, 7-9, 11, 6, 20, 2, 5, 18, 19, 21-23 (ends "foderat"), 24, 27 (end only, from "alii uero"), 30 (ends "redditur"), 31-33 and epilogue. Prologue beg. "Benedictus dominus deus qui uult omnes," and text "Primum igitur tanquam uerum." f. 17 b.
7. "Explicit liber primus . incipit secundus": the anonymous collection of Apophthegmata Patrum printed by Rosweyd, who wrongly ascribes it to Rufinus, as liber iii., op. cit. p. 492, Migne, P. L. lxxiii. col. 739. Originally incomplete, ending (on f. 86) with no. 40, Rosweyd, p. 507, "et apostolos est locutus," but the part on this page is cancelled by the scribe of artt. 8-12. Prologue beg. "Vere mundum quis dubitet," and text "Quidam sanctorum seniorum patrum." f. 37 b.
8. Conclusion of art. 7 in another hand. Ends "saluatus est. Explicit liber secundus sancti Jeronimi presbyteri in vitam [altered to vitas] patrum." f. 48.
9. "Incipit vita sancte Thaisis meretricis": the anonymous life of St. Thaisis included in Rosweyd's liber i., op . cit. p. 374, Migne, P. L. lxxiii. col. 661. Beg. "Quedam meretrix fuit nomine Thaisis," and ends "in pace." f. 73 b.
10. Extracts from the Apophthegmata Patrum, probably by way of appendix to the previously written art. 14 (v. infra). The Greek source of all the tales in both articles (with perhaps one exception) appears to be the --------------------- mentioned by Photiuis, cod. cxcviii. (Migne, Patr. Gr. ciii. col. 664), who gives the titles of chapters, but not known to be extant except in the two imperfect Latin versions printed by Rosweyd as lib. v. and vi. (Patr. Lat. lxxiii. coll. 855-1022). The versions in this MS. generally agree with the words of Pelagius' translation in Rosweyd's lib. v., but often differ from those of Johannes Subdiaconus in lib. vi.; hence there is a possibility that they originate in a text of Pelagius more comprehensive than that printed by Rosweyd. The contents are: (a) "De Bublio monacho qui dyabolum oratione retardauit," cf. Joh. Subd. ii. ch. 12, Rosweyd, p. 650. Beg. "Temporibus Iuliani imperatoris quando ad Persidam est profectus." f. 73;-(b) "De duobus iuuenibus qui venerunt ad sanctum Macharium volentes cum eo habitare," cf. Joh. Subd. iii. ch. 2. The Greek is in one of the alphabetical collections, Patr. Gr. lxv. col. 2730. f. 73b; (c) Without title, cf. Job. Subd. i. ch. 13. f. 74;-(d, e, f, g) = Pelag. xviii. ch. 3, 5, 6, 8. ff. 74 b, 75;-(h) = Pelag. xviii. ch. 19. f. 75;-
(i) = Pelag. xviii. ch. 14. f. 76;-(k) = Pelag. xii. ch. 8. f. 76;-
(l, m) = Pelag. xiii. ch. 6, 13. ff. 76, 76 b; -(n) = Pelag. xiv. ch. 14. f. 76 b;-(o) "Judicia dei," = Pelag. xv. ch. 1. f. 77;-
(p) = Pelag. xv. ch. 43. f. 77.
11. "Incipit vita sancte Pelagie que peccatrix appellatur": the life by Jacobus, included in Rosweyd's liber i. p. 376. Beg. "Magnas semper deo gracias referre debemus." f. 77 b.
12. "Incipit vita sancte Eufrosine virginis": ibid. p. 363. Beg. "Fuit vir in Alexandria nomine Pafnucius." f. 81. Before art. 13 is the cancelled fragment of art. 7.
13. "Excerpta de dyalogo Sulpicii Seueri de vita patrum": Rosweyd's liber iv. (p. 536) complete. Preface beg. "Frequenter ac sepius a me fratres flagitatis," and text "Ante hoc triennium quo tempore hinc abii." f. 86.
14. Excepts from the Apophthegmata Patrum, as in art. 10. With the exception of the first, which has not been identified, they correspond with Pelagius' version (Rosweyd's lib. v.) as follows:-
(a) Beg. "Interrogatus abbas Johannes in transitu suo." f. 99 b;-
(b) = Pelag. i. ch. 19, 22. f. 99 b;-(c, d, e, f) = Pelag. iii. ch. 4, 5, 7, 23 and 24. f. 99 b;-(g) = Pelag. iv. ch. 7. f. 99 b;-(h, i, k, 1, m) = Pelag. v. ch. 14, 30, 36, 38, 39. ff. 99 b-100;-(n) = Pelag. vi.
21. f. 100;-(o,p, q, r, s) = Pelag. vii. ch. 15, 17, 31, 36, 43, 44. f. 100 b-101 b;-(t)= Pelag. viii. ch. 19. f. 101 b;-(u) = Pelag. ix. ch. 11. f. 101 b;-(v, w, x) = Pelag. ch. 1 and 17, 44, 54. f. 101 b;-(y) = Pelag. xi. ch. 10 and xii. ch. 5. f. 101 b;-(z)= Pelag. xi. ch. 39. Ends "sic enim Arsenius vixit." f. 102.
15. The Lausiac History of Palladius. Without title. The Latin version, like tbat in Add. MS. 33518 (see the prolegomena of Dom C. Butler to his edition of the Greek, Cambridge Texts and Studies, 1898, p. 64), represents an incomplete text, but it does not include two paragraphs interpolated in that MS. in the chapters on Evagrius and Eulogius. It concludes with the story of the calumniated lector (ch. lxx. in the Greek), cf. Rosweyd's appendix, pp. 978-993, (in the second edition, as reprinted by Migne, pp. 984-999). Preface beg. "Beatifico et admiror propositum tuum," and text "Cum primum ad Alexandriam perrexissem." Ends "aput dominum potenciam." f. 102.
16. Apophthegmata patrum, a collection of uncertain origin. More than half the stories occur among the interpolatious in the version of Palladius mentioned above as printed in Rosweyd's appendix; others correspond, but not verbatim, with the --------------------- and two are unidentified. Contents:-(a, b) = Pall. apud Rosweyd xi. p. 988 (994). Beg. "Dicebant etiam sancti patres de sancto abbate Johanne." f. 115;-(c) On the need of spiritual studies. f. 115;-(d) On a monk of Cellia who fasted vaingloriously. f. 115;-(e) = Pall. xx. 1, p. 993 (999). f. 115 b;-(f, g)= Pall. vi. last part, p. 982 (988). f. 115 b;-(h) = Pall. xx. 18, p. 995 (1001). f. 116;-(i) = Pan. iv. end, p. 981 (987). f. 116; -(k) Differs notably from Pelagius xiii. 1, p. 614. f. 116;-(l) of. Pelagius v. 14, p. 574. f. 116;-(m) = Pall. ix. end, p. 985. f 116 b;-(n) cf. Job. Subd. iv. 32, p. 661. f. 116 b;-(o) cf. Pel. xvi. 17, p. 632. f. 117;-(p.) cf. Pel. xv. 52, p. 620. .f. 117;-(q) = Pall. ix. part, p. 984 (990). f. 117;-(r) = Pall. xii. p. 988 (994). f. 118;-(s) = Pall. xx. 7, p. 994 (1000). f..118;-(t) cf. Pel. x. 18, p. 598. Ends "congregacionem fratrum perturbat." f. 118b.
17. Life of S. Frontonius; without title. Not that printed by Rosweyd, p. 238, and the Bollandists, Acta SS. 14 Apr. p. 201, but another life. Preface beg. "Edificacionis uestre et mei solatii," and text "Erat quidam senex monachus a prima etate denotus." Ends "sua sanctitate consumat." f. 118 b.
18. "Incipit prologus in uitam sancti Mauri Abbatis": the life by Faustus, printed by the Bollandists, Acta SS. 15 Jan. p. 321. At the end, as ch. 28, is appended a sermon beg. "Qui homo dei et Christi," and ending"lumen uite amen." Preface beg. "Faustus famulorum Christi famulus.....Cum a parentibus meis," and text "Postquam diuinitas saluatoris nostri." f. 120.
19. "Huius imitabilis conuersationis actuumque et morum uitam et penitencie magnum uirileque certamen uenerabilis Marie Egyptiace," etc.: the life by Sophronius, Patr. Gr. lxxxvii. col. 3697. The translation has considerable differences from that printed by Rosweyd, p. 382. Preface beg. "Secretum regis celare bonum est," and text "Fuit quidam senex in Palestine monasteriis." f. 133 b.
20. "Incipit prefatio" and "prologus Athanasii episcopi in uitam sancti Antonii Episcopus Athanasius ad peregrinos monachos scribit dicens": the life of St. Antony by St. Athanasius, Rosweyd, p. 35, but without the epilogue of Evagrius. 22. "Vita sancti Pachumii abbatis" (the title is later) : the life of St. Pachomius of Tabenna, translated from the Greek by Dionysius Exiguus, Rosweyd, p. 111. Without the translator's prologue. Beg. "Dominus noster Jesus Christus sapiencie fons et sciencie verum lumen." f. 166 b.
