Fragment from the Book of Hours (the 'Hours of Etienne Chevalier')
- Scope & Content:
-
1 miniature by Jean Fouquet from the book of hours, comissioned by Etienne Chevalier (d. 1474) and therefore known as the 'Hours of Étienne Chevalier'. 47 other remaining miniatures excised from this manuscript are in the Musée Condé at Chantilly (40 miniatures), Paris, Louvre, Dépatement des Artes Graphiques, R. F. 1679 and M. I. 1093; Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, ms. n.a. lat. 1416; Paris, Musée Marmottan, collection Wildenstein, ms. 153; New York, Metropolitan Museum, collection Robert Lehman 1975.1.2490; and Upton House, National Trust, ms. 184. Two folios of text (Psalms 129 and 142, and litanies) are in the collection of Roger and Alix De Kesel Deurle (Belgium).
The manuscript was probably produced after 1452 when Etienne Chevalier became the royal treasurer and when his wife, Catherine Budé, whose name or monograms are not included in the book, died, and before 1461, the date of death of Charles VII who is depicted in one of the miniatures (see Avril, Reynaud and Cordellier, 2011). The manuscript was dismembered in the 18th century.
The miniature depicts David kneeling in penitence before God encircled by cherubim. Psalm 37: 'Domine, ne in furore', in gold capitals on a blue ground, with the monogram 'EC' of Étienne Chevalier. The miniature was placed at the beginning of the Penitential Psalms.
