JOURNALS, correspondence and other papers of Joseph Hékékyan Bey, an Armenian in the Egyptian service, 1829-1874, including records and sketches of archaeological excavations in Egypt. Hékékyan was born circ. 1807, the son of a translator in the service of Mehemet Ali, who paid for his education in England, at Stonyhurst College and elsewhere, and his training in engineering and manufactures, 1818-1830. On his arrival in Egypt he was employed in superintending cotton factories, technical schools, search for coal, etc. In 1847 he was obliged to go to Vienna for cure of ophthalmia, and was present there at the troubles of October 1848. Returning to Egypt in 1849 he was made President of the Board of Health, but soon afterwards Abbas Pasha placed him on quarter-pay, and from that time he was chiefly engaged in excavations made at the instance of Leonard Horner. He wrote (London, privately printed, 1863) A Treatise on the Chronology of Siriadic Monuments. Twenty-four volumes. Presented by Tito Hékékyan Pasha.
