BIBLE, in Latin; Vulgate version, the Psalms in Jerome's version from the Hebrew. There are no summaries or divisions other than Langton's. In the margin (chiefly in Genesis and the Gospels) are fragments of a Correctorium, probably of Dominican origin, resembling that in the Ottoboni MS. 293 (Vercellone's M) at Rome. The order of books and prefaces (the references are to Berger, Mém. prés. à I'Acad. des Inscr., i. sér., tom. xi., ii. partie) is as follows:-(1) Pentatench, with prefaces nos. 1, 2. f. 1;-(2) Joshua, with preface no. 22, Judges and Ruth. f. 60 b;-(3) 1-4 Kings, preface no. 30. f. 76 b;-(4) I and 2 Chronicles (with the prayer of Manasses), pref. no. 36. f. 114 b;-
(5) 1 and 2 Esdras, i.e. Ezra and Nehemiah, pref. no. 42. f. 133 b; -(6) Tobit, pref. no. 45. f. 141 b;-(7) Judith, pref. no. 48. f. 144 b;-(8) Esther, pref. no. 51. f. 148 b;-(9) Job, pref. nos. 55, 56. f. 152 b;-(10) Psalter (Hebrew, including Ps. cli.), no preface, larger initials to (Hebrew numbers) ps. 1, 27, 39, 56, 69, 81, 98, 110. f. 160 b;-(l1) Proverbs, pref. no. 129. f. 179;-
(12) Ecclesiastes, pref. no. 130. f. 185 b;-(l 3) Song of Solomon, pref. beg. "Cantica canticorum eo quod super omnia." f. 188;-
(14) Wisdom, pref. no. 189, and Ecelesiasticus. f. 189;-(15) Prophets, viz. Isaiah, pref. no. 150, Jeremiah, pref. no. 155, Lamentations and Jermia's prayer, Baruch, Ezekiel, pref. no. 162, Daniel, pref. no. 166, and minor prophets with prefaces 170, 174. 180, 184, 185 etc. ff. 206-276;-(16) 1 and 2 M accabees pref. no. l90. f. 276; -(17) Gospel-3, pref. nos. 199, 225, 230, 236. ff. 293, 303 b, 309b, 321;-(18) Pauline epistles, pref. nos. 262, 256 and 280 b, etc. ff. 329- 348 b;-(l9) Hebrews, pref. no. 283. f. 348 b;-(20) Acts, pref. no. 246. f. 351b;-(21 ) Catholic epistles, pref. nos. 293, 290. f. 362;-(22) Apocolypse pref. nos. 310, 311. f. 366 b. On f. 371 b is added in another hand preface no. 67, belonging to the Psalms. At the end (f. 372) are "Interpretationes Hebraicorum nominum," printed in Beda',s works (Cologne, 1688), iii. p. 371, but more probably assigned to Remigius of Auxerre. Beg. "Az apprehendens uel apprehensio." Added (f. 39 b) in a hand of the end of the 13th cent. is a table of Epistles and Gospels, evidently of Dominican use from the distinctive way in which the feasts of St. Peter Martyr and St. Domonic (two) are written. Vellum; ff. ii. + 397. 7¾ in. x 5½ in. xiii. cent. Written in Italy in a small hand resembling that of the usual French Bibles of the period, but with coloured initials to each book in Italian style, beautifully executed. The first initial has a small figure of St. Jerome, and that of Genesis represents the seven days of creation, with grotesques in the lower margin. Sec. fol. "Nec, scire." The fly-leaf is from a book in French, printed oil vellum, the text being washed off, so as to be hardly perceptable. On f. 1 is an ink-impression from a modern seal, "Sigillum sanctae Mariae Castaneae." Belonged to R. Spence (Sotheby's sale-cat.
15 Mar. 1907, lot 384).
