MISSAL, of Sarum use; copied in the 14th cent., apparently from an original of the middle of the 13th. Brought up to date both by the original scribe and by a 15th cent. reviser. Contents: (1) Proprium de tempore, Advent-Holy Week (Litany, f. 104). Followed (f. 106) by additions of later date, viz. Dedicatio eccelesiae, and, in another hand, of the middle of the 15th cent., Commemoratio sancti Osmundi. f. 1;-(2) Prefaces and Canon of the Mass. f. 109;-(3) Proprium de tempore continued. f. 119;-
(4) Proprium de sanctis. Followed (f. 241 b) by some substituted prayers, etc., for the November festivals, with rubric "iste oraciones et secreta et postcommuniones sunt de usu Sar. et deficiunt superius a die omnium sanctorum exclusive in suis locis et ibi scribuntur alio (alia?) loco eorum que non sunt de usu moderne Sar." At the end (f. 242 b) is a note on the two saints of the name Saturninus. Marginal references to art. 10 are added in a 15th cent. band and the office of St. Giles (f. 225) is noted as "non Sar." f. 182;-
(5) Commune sanctorum. f. 242 b;-(6) Ordo ad facienda sponsalia. f. 278 b;-(7) Benedictiones, commendatio animarum, etc. f. 281;-(8) Ad missam mortuorum. f. 284 b;-(9) Kyrie, sequences, etc. Some (St. Anne, Corpus Christi and others) are in a later hand, over erasures. f. 295 b;-(10) Additions of the 15th cent., viz. St. Anne, Transl. of St. Richard, St. David, St. Chad, St. Cuthburga, St. Winefred, St. John of Beverley, St. Sigismund ("contra febres"), etc., with the trental of St. Gregory. f. 325. On the fly-leaves (ff. 330 b, 331), in a 15th cent. hand, is an office for St. Keneburga. Vellum; ff. i. + 331. 6¾ in. x 4½ in. First half of the xiv. cent. Small miniature-initials: others in red and blue. On the cover are the initials J. H. N. (early 19th cent.). Sale-cat., Sotheby,'s, 18 July, 1907, lot 301.
