LETTER-BOOK of Samuel Bentham, the naval architect, and Jeremy Bentham, the philosopher, his brother; 20 Jan. O.S. 1784- 25 Nov. 1789. The earlier letters (ff. 1-36) relate to S. Bentham's employment in Russia, and the bulk of the volume (ff. 37-222) to J. Bentham's journey through France, the Mediterranean, Constantinople, etc., to join him at Critchoff. At the end (ff. 235-242) are a few letters out of chronological order, 5 Jan. 1784-1 Jan. 1788, including (f. 235) an original letter from [Richard Howe], Viscount Howe, to Jeremiah Bentham, father of the above, dated Admiralty, 5 Nov. 1784. Ff. 1-222 are in the hand of one copyist; ff. 223-242, with the exception of Lord Howe's letter, in J. Bentham's hand. Among the Bentham MSS. previously acquired (Add. MSS. 33537- 33564), Add. MS. 33558, ff. 206-376,contains nearly the whole of the present volume. See also Add. MS.33540, ff.4-243 passim,and Add. MS. 33552, ff. 13-68. Portions are printed by Sir J. Bowring in J.
