CORRESPONDENCE of Charles Townshend, 2nd Viscount Townshend, Secretary of State, principally with Horatio Walpole [cr. Baron Walpole of Worlterton 1756], as Ambassador at Paris, including also many letters from Rev. W. Ayerst, Secretary to the Embassy, and Sir. L. Schaub, Ambassador, to G.Tilson; 10 Nov. N.S. 1720-21 Dec. O.S. 1724. The letters deal principally with the undermining of Sir. L. Schaub's influence by Walpole, the question of investitures in the Italian duchies, the dukedom desired for Monsieur de la Vrillière, the abdication of Philip V. of Spain, the abolition of the Ostend Company, etc. Extracts are printed in Coxes Memoirs of Lord Walpole, vol. i.; see also the Historical MSS.
