"SIGNALS and Instructions in Addition to the General Printed Sailing and Fighting Instructions." Printed, with copious MS. alterations and additions, signed by Adm. Sir G. B. Rodney, dated "on board H.M.S. Sandwich at Spithead, 18th Dec. 1779" (on his appointiment to command the fleet for the West lndies), and addressed to Capt. [John] Doughlas, of H.M.S. Terrible. An article (printed) by Julian S. Corbett in The Times, 19 Dec. 1905, is annexed (f. 20), in which it is shown that the Instructions here printed were drawn up (probably by Hawke or under his influence) between 1760 and 1778, while Rodney's alterations and additions form a new code, under which the battle of 12 April, 1782, was fought. Neither set of Instructions was known before the discovery of this copy. The flags described are coloured by hand in the margin See J. S. Corbett, Signals and Instructions 1776-1794 (Navy Records Soc., vol. xxxv, 1908[9]), p. 180, where the full text is printed. Paper; ff. 22. Small folio. xviii. cent. Belonged before 1908 to George Prichard (Sotheby's sale-cat. 12 June, 1908, lot 211).
