LETTERS of [Admiral Sir] W[illiam] Sidney Smith; 1795-1840 The majority of the letters are addressed to Admiral Sir Richard Bickerton, being most frequent during the Egyptian campaign of 1801. Others to whom letters are addressed are [Mary] Smith, the writer's mother (f. 2), Major-General [Robert] Ross (ff. 6, 8, 47), Sir Hudson Lowe (ff. 52, 70), and [Baron Albin Seine] Roussin. Admiral and Ministre de la Marine (1840 ? f. 78). At f. 60 is a letter from Caroline Sidney Smith, his wife, to [Sir R. Bickerton], 17 Sept. 1812. Included are (1) "Distinguishing Signals of the Squadron under the Orders of the Capitana Bey: English Signals to Turkish shipes November 19th 1800." Certified copy. Signed "W. Sidney Smith." f. 10;- (2) Instructions for boats' crews ordered "to create a diversion off the town of Alexandria and to the Eastward thereof in order to favour the landing of a detachment of the army to the Westward in the lake"; "Tigre at Anchor off the Pharos of Alexandria, 16th August, 1801." f. 24;-(3) Engraved portraits of Sir W.
