CUSTOMS, etc., of the city of London and of the borough of Bishhop's Lynn, now King's Lynn, co. Norfolk. The first part of the MS., a copy, in one hand of the first half of the 14th cent, of ordinances, etc., relating to London tempp. Hen. III.-Edw. II., was probably made for the burgesses of Lynn, who enjoyed by charter of John (Rotuli Chartarum, p. 138) the same franchises as Oxford, and therefore as London. The Lynn additions are of various dates, 1340-1406. Contents: 1. Two ordinances contained in the London Liber Custumarum, (Riley, Munimenta Gildhallae, Rolls Series, 1860, p. 89), viz. (a) "Placita terre tenta in hustengis London die lune " (etc., 22 Nov. 1277), an order touching litigants' default. The whole concludes with a note that no mention is made here of la riue la reyne (Queenhithe) because the city holds it in farm of the county of Cornwall: f. 36. After the Explicit of art. 34 the Lynn entries begin in hands of Edw. III.'s reign.
35. "Libertas in ciuitate Londoniarum": memorandum that on Friday before S. Ambrose, 14 Edw. III. [31 Mar. 1340] Thomas de Melcheburn and other burgesses of Lenne [Lynn] came before Andrew Aubry, mayor, and the aldermen of London and producing the king's writ of 28 Jan. 1340 successfully claimed immunity from murage, as granted them by Edw. II. (16 May 1313, Cal. Charter Rolls, iii. p. 217), and that the writ is on the file of the year and entered "in rubeo libro memorandorum folio xxxi anno xivo predicto." This last reference is to Letter-Book F (See Sharpe, p. 44). f. 38 b.
