REGISTER of letters, etc., of Alexander [Hume-Campbell], Lord Polwarth [2nd Earl of Marchmont, 1724], Lord Lieutenant of Berwickshire, relating to the Jacobite Rebellion; 10 Sept.-27 Dec. 1715. The letters are addressed to the Secretaries of State, [John Campbell] Duke of Argyll, Commander in Chief, John Robethon, secretary to George I., Geo. Drummond, Commissioner of Excise, the Hon. Geo. Baillie of Jerviswood, Commissioner of the Admiralty, and others, and refer principally to the raising of the Berwickshire militia, the movements of Lord Polwarth and the Orange Battalion, the movements of the rebels, and in particular their occupation of Leith and subsequent retreat to Seatoun House on their way to England (f. 11b), the difficulty in maintaining the Berwickshire troops and their dismissal, etc. Paper ; ff. 43.
