ORIGINAL DISPATCHES, many of them in duplicate, from Alfonso VI., King of Portugal, and his ministers [Luis de Sousa e Vasconcellos], Conde de Castello Melhor, and Antonio de Sousa de Macedo, to Francisco de Mello [e Torres], Marquez de Sande, Conde da Ponte, Portuguese Ambassador Extraordinary to England, and later to France to negotiate the marriage of Alfonso to the Princess d'Aumale et de Nemours; 1662-1666. Portuguese. The King's letters are signed by the King and Castello Melhor, and bear. a paper seal; those of the ministers are signed by them, and a few have holograph additions. Many lettersare in cipher;some of these are deciphered in the margin by a contemporary hand, and others are followed by modern decipherments, which, however, are not always to be trusted, as a comparison with the older decipherments will show. Several of the letters are accompanied by enclosures. The subjects are the King's marriage, the war with Spain and negotiations for peace, the cession of Bombay to England, the English proposals for an alliance with Portugal against Holland and France, etc. Besides, the dispatches and enclosures the volume also includes:-
(1) Two holograph letters to the Marquez de Sande from the Princess d'Aumale, 20 Nov. (no year), and undated, answered 22 Dec. 1664. Fr. With seals. ff. 14, 16;-(2) A. de Sousa de Macedo to Ruy Tellez de Menezes, 30 Jan. 1666. f 70;-(3) Charles II. of England to the Marquez de Sande, 17 Apr. 1666. Fr. Copy. f. 120. With a title-page, and the Royal Arms of Portugal, drawn in ink within an ornamental border. At the end (fF. ii.-ix.) is bound up a modern description of the contents. Paper; ff. ix. + 125. Folio.
