Title:

ASTON PAPERS: correspondence and papers of the family of Aston, of Tixall, co. Stafford; 1613-1703. Nine volumes. Paper. Folio. The bulk of the collection consists of the official correspondence of Sir Walter Aston (cr. Baron Aston of Forfar 1627), who was twice ambassador in Spain. His first embassy (1621-1625) covered the period of the negotiations for the marriage between

Charles, Prince of Wales, and the Infanta Maria, during which Aston, as Resident Ambassador, was joined with Lord Digby, Ambassador Extraordinary. In addition to the Secretaries of State and others, his correspondents include several English ministers abroad, who kept him informed of the state of Europe, and particularly of the affairs of the Palatinate. His own letters, as contained in his letter-books and in drafts and copies elsewhere, furnish a vivid picture of the Spanish Court, and describe very fully the visit of Prince Charles and Buckingham to Madrid. In his second embassy (1635-1638) much of his time was occupied with the grievances of English merchants trading to Spain. He was recalled early in 1638 (v. 36448, f. 123) and died in 1639. The private family correspondence is in the last volume (36452).
