CUMBERLAND PAPERS. Correspondence of the family of Cumberland, with papers, diaries and note-books of George Cumberland, of Bristol; 1748-1836. Most of the letters are of a purely private nature, and consist mainly of the correspondence of George Cumberland with his two sons, George and Sydney, and his brother Richard, Vicar of Driffield, co. Gloucester. The elder George Cumberland was a man of artistic, antiquarian and literary tastes, and among his correspondents are William Blake, Francis Douce, Sir Joseph Banks, Thomas Stothard, Thomas Taylor the "Platonist," Joseph Lancaster, Sir Francis Chantrey, and others. His letters and diaries also contain much information about Bristol. Thirty-one volumes and two rolls. Paper. The collection was presented in 1849 by George Cumberland, the son, on condition that it should not be opened until 1900. The contents are:-
