THREE declamations in French by Jean de Luxembourg, Abbot of Ivry, Bishop of Pamiers 1540-1548, third son of Charles, Comte de Brienne. His name " Jehan de Luxembourg " is appended to each. Contents:-
1. " Remonstrance faicte par la seur du due de Julliers au roy d'Angleterre et a son conseil," written in the name of Anne of Cleves. lt is the " very foolish book by Monsieur Dyvry " which was in circulation (anonymously, in MS.) in Paris as early as 26 Jan. 1542, when William Paget sent a copy to Henry VIII., and the printing of which Francis 1. promised Paget on 22 Feb. that he would stop (Cal. State Papers, Henry VIII., vol. xvii., noo.
55, 56, 128). Nevertheless two editions appeared (L'Arrivour and Paris), both undated and both with the blunder " Marie " for Anne's name (a MS. copy in Harl. 459 1, f. 83, is probably from the print), and an Italian version was printed at Bologna, 1558 (v. Archaeologia, xlvii., p. 249). f. 2.
2 la royne de Nauerre ": a poem in rhyming verse (727 lines) addressed to Marguerite de Valois, wife of Henry II. of Navarre, discussing the question of bodily and spiritual beauty. f. 43.
3. " Romonstrance faicte par les confederez de l'empereur aux estatz tenuz a Valdolic sur la reddition de Alylan," followed by a " Responce aux remonstrances faictes a l'empereur par aucun de ses confederez et subgextz sur la restitution du duche de Mylan a plea for the rights of Francis to the Duchy of Milan, then in the hands of Charles V. f. 59. Vellum; ff. 88. XVI. cent. Illuminated initials. Belonged to soustiendray Croy " and " J'ayme quy, m'ayme," with the date 1618, are on f. 2, inscribed round the painted arms of Croy (argent, three bars gules), surmounted by a coronet and encircled by the collar of the Golden Fleece. These arms perhaps indicate that the book previously belonged to a head of the house, probably Charles de Croy, 4th Duke d'Arscbot, who died 1612. An old librarynumbering 382. Belonged in 1880 to Robert Samuel Turner (salecat. 1888, lot 985), and afterwards to Henry White (sale-cat. 1902, lot 1039). Modern red morocco binding with gilt tooling by Trautz-Bauzonnet. 8 1/4 in. x 6 in
