Fragments of John Bellenden's translation of Livy's Ab urbe condita into Scots English
- Scope & Content:
-
Commissioned by James V, king of Scots (1512–1542).
Fragments of corrected drafts, partly in Bellenden's hand, and annotations. The fragments comprise Book I, ch. 5–10, 11–14, 16–21, and Book III, ch. 1–5, fragments of 9, 10, 11 and ch. 15–18. Part of ch. 15–17 of the latter book is in a double draft. A portion of ch. 5, 6 of Book I partly fills a gap in the Edinburgh manuscript, from which Bellenden's translation was printed in 1822.

Origin:
Scotland.
Provenance:
Presented to the British Museum by George Reid, 20 May 1902 (note on recto of second flyleaf).
These fragments were found in the old binding of a book printed at Edinburgh in 1537 (see Geoge F. Warner's notice of their discovery in Athenaeum, 12 July (1902), p. 64. Thomas Rutledge suggests that this book is James Foullis' Strena, probably printed in 1528 rather than 1537.
