ELEVEN LETTERS Of Admiral John Jervis, Earl of St. Vincent, the first to Isaac Barré, the others to Evan Nepean, Secretary to the Admiralty; 22 Mar., 5 May, 1797, 30 June, 1800-11 Feb. 1801. The letters are all on naval affairs, with free comments on various officers. In the first, referring to the victory off Cape St. Vincent, the writer says, "although the partiality of my friends places the event of the 14th Feby on a level with the illustrious victories of Russel, Rodney and Howe, I cannot bring my mind up to the comparison, and I really do feel oppress'd with the praise bestow'd on it." The last refers to the offer to him of the post of First Lord of the Admiralty. The letter of 17 Doe. 1800 (f. 12) is printed in Tucker's Memoirs of ... the Earl of St. Vincent, 1844, ii. p. 119.
