" THE PERITINERARY of Devon, with the historicall discription therof and the citty of Exeter ... collected by T[ristram] R[isdon] gen : for the love of his country and countrimen ": an earlier recension of Risdon's Chorographicall Description or Survey of the County of Devoon (printed imperfectly by Curll 1714, better in 1811), from which it differs, amoung other things, in the insertion of many monumental inscriptions. By the aid of these the date may be fixed approximately as after 1632 (f. 71 b) and before 1635, the date of the death of Sir Pole, who is mentioned as living (f. 11), while the imperfect MS. Add. 33420 and the 1811 edition speak of him as dead. The list of sheriffs (f. 93) also ends with 9 Chas. I. [1633-1634]. Two other MSS., Harl. 2410 (imperfect) and Stowe 819, perhaps represent intermediate recensions. The passage relating to Pole and numerous corrections are in a different hand, perhaps that of the author. The author's full name was originally appended by the scribe to the preface, but was afterwards abbreviated to initials. Paper; ff. 97. Circ. 1633. Interleaved in the 18th cent. Bought by Sir Tho. Phillipps of Thomas Thorpe the bookseller (catal. 1850, p. 20); Phillipps MS. 12390 (sale-cat. 1896, lot 391).
