SPECULUM SACERDOTALE: a series of addresses to parish priests on the festivals of the Christian year, in English. Preceded by a prologue, beginning 'The olde fadres a fore tymes made fro bigynnyng the festyuites of holy apostles and martires,' in the course of which (f. 2) the author thus describes his work: 'Therfore ye serteyne prestes which ben dere and famyliare vn to me, before alle other vn to you I redresse my speche, and seeþ that for the instance and prayers whiche that ye haue makyd vn to me for this present werke I haue here disposyd and writen aftur my sympilnes of the solempnytees of alle seyntes, the whiche schulden worshipfully eche sonneday be schewid vn to youre peple … Wherfore, sires myne, taketh here youre werke, occupacion, and besynes, that ye mowe haue therby a more profitable forme and better matere. That is to say, of the pronunsyng of solempnitees and festyuall tymes. Right as ye haue hadde and saide sermones in the same tymes here afore endytid to youre honde in latyn or romayne tonge.' The festivals include those of the principal seasons of the Christian year, the apostles and chief saints, and St. Thomas of Canterbury, St. Gregory, St. George, St. Austin of England, St. Matin, St. Edmund the king, St. Clement, St. Catherine, and St. Nicholas; legends of the saints are recounted in most cases. In dealing with Lent, a considerable treatise on penance is included. The prologue contains a strong admonition against regarding worship offered at the chapels and altars of saints as addressed to the saints themselves. The title as given above from the 'Incipit' is repeated at the end: 'Explicit liber qui vocatur speculum sacerdotale.' A table of contents has been added by a hand of the 18th cent.
