ACCOUNT by the Rev. Thomas Moore (d. 1903), chaplain to the forces at Cawnpore, of events at Cawnpore, Lucknow, etc..., during the Indian mutiny in 1857-8, chiefly made up of extracts from his letters to his wife, in the form of a diary, 17 Oct. 1857- 27 Apr. 1858. He was at Benares 16 Oct. (f. 12), and travelled by Allahabad, 20 Oct. (f. 16), to Camnpore, 1 Nov. (f. 16 b), where lie remained. The diary proper (ff. 12-51) is preceded and followed by short extracts from printed 'books, relating for the most part to events earlier in 1857. With a few original contemporary pen drawings, photographs, etc., including (a) pen sketches [by Rev. T. Moore] of Massacre Ghant, the assembly rooms and theatre, his own house, the church, and Sir Hugh Wheeler's bungalow, Cawnpore, 1857-1858. ff. 74-79 ;-(b) photographs of Furrut Bux palace, Nabut Bux gateway, clock-tower and mosque, Chutter Munzil palace, Residency as left by the rebels, Baillie guard, etc., Lucknow, April, 1858. ff. 80-86;-(c) pen sketch by Gen. [James] Neill of Wheeler's entrenchments, Cawnpore. f. 88. The contents were evidently not written down at the time, but were compiled later, apparently not before 1890. Paper; ff. v. + 88.
