MISCELLANEOUS PAPERS, with a few letters, relating to the following members of the Herbert family, viz. (1) Edward, 1st Baron Herbert of Cherbury (d. 1648);-(2) Sir Henry Herbert, Knt., his brother (d. 1673);-(3) Henry, son of the latter, 1st Baron Herbert of the new creation (d. 1709), and Henry his son, 2nd Baron (d. 1738). The names of the writers of the letters are included in the Index. Among the papers are:-
1. Twenty-two poems, sonnets, etc., by Edward, Lord Herbert, two of which, viz. that beg. " Innumerable Beauties, thou white haire " (f. 17), and that addressed " To one Blacke, and not very Hansoms, who expected commendation, " beg. " What though your eyes bee starres, your haire bee night " (f. 17 b), are not included in the original printed edition of 1665, nor in that of 1881. The slight verbal alterations and additions in another hand, as well as the note at the end, " The Verses of Ed. L. Herbert of Cherbery and Castle Island, 1630," are apparently in the poet's own hand. f. 1.
2. 3. Order to the Catholics of England to desist sending offers of men and money for the northern expedition, etc. ; [June, 1639]. ]Printed by Rushworth, ii. p. 821, as " A Letter from the Pope to his Nuncio in England." S. R. Gardiner (History of England, 1603- 1642, ix. p. 26) discredits its genuineness. f. 33.
4. Inventory of plate and goods in Lord Herbert's house at Westminster; 9 Mar. 1641[2]. f. 34.
5. " A Catalogue of Books sent with Mr. [Henry] IIerbert to Oxford, Jan. 12, 1669[70]." f. 69. Paper; ff. 92. Folio.
