MISSAL, OF YORK USE; early 15th cent. The contents and text agree substantially with those printed, from other sources, by W. G. Henderson,
Missals ad Usum Insignis Ecclesiae Eboracensis, 2 vols., Surtees Soc., vols. lix, lx, 1874 for 1872, to whom the existence of the present MS. was unknown. A few of the items printed by Henderson are, however, wanting here, and there are numerous minor textual variations, particularly in the rubrics. Where readings differ, the MS. tends to follow the other MS. York missals cited by Henderson rather than the early printed editions: in particular, art. 2 tends to follow University College, Oxford, MS. 78 B (Henderson MS. C) and art. 3 to follow Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, MS. 33 and Stonyhurst College MS. 3 (Henderson MSS. D, G). On the York Use see also Archdale A. King, Liturgies of the Past, 1959, pp. 326-347. For the present MS. see Brit. Mus. Quart., vii, 1932-1933, pp. 107-109 (reprinted in Friends of the National Libraries, Annual Report, 1932-1933, pp. 21-22, where f. 12ob of the MS. is reproduced as pl. iv). Contents:-(i) Calendar. The feasts are as printed by Henderson, op. cit., i, pp. xxx-xli, with a few differences of gradings; that of St Osmund of Salisbury (4 Dec.), canonised in 1456, is added in a later hand. ff. 1-6b;-(2) Temporale, Advent-Sat. aft. Pentecost. fF. 7-107;-(3) Ordinary and Canon of the Mass, with preparatory and thanksgiving prayers. ff. 107-120;-(4) Temporale, Trinity Sun.-Fri. aft. 25th Sun. aft. Octave of Pentecost. ff. 120b-152;-(5) Mass 'in dedicacione ecclesie'. Ends imperfectly owing to the loss of a following leaf. ff. 152, 152.b;-(6) Sanctorale, SS. Andrew-Linus, beg. imperfectly (cf. art. 5). ff. 153-186;-(7) Commune Sanctorum. ff. 186-202;-(8) Votive Masses, etc., including the Marriage Service (ff. 217-219) and blessing of Holy Water (ff. 219, 219b). ff. 202-219b;-(9) Later 15th and 16th-cent. additions, including:-(a) Hymn and Prayer to the Virgin for use in time of plague, beg. respectively 'Stella celi extirpauit' (Chevalier, Rep. Hymn. no. 19438) and 'Deus misericordie, Deus pietatis, Deus indulgencie, qui miseratus es'. f. 220;-(b) Mass 'pro euitanda mortalitate', cf. Henderson, op. cit., ii, p. 233, preceded by a note of indulgences granted by Pope Clement VI (as in Missale Sarum, ed. F. H. Dickinson, 1861-1883, p. 886*) and by William [? de la Zouchl, Abp. of York. ff. 220-221;-(c) Collects to be said at Mass for the reconciliation of the Kingdom under Philip and Mary, beg. 'Deus qui hoc regnum a catholicae ecclesie unitate'. f. 221 b. Vellum; ff. 221. 277 mm. x 190 mm. (cropped). Early xv cent. Gatherings of 8 leaves (16, xx lacks 3) with catchwords and, occasionally, signatures. Sec. fol. (of text) 'subvertet'. Written in double colunms Of 39 or (e.g. ff. 71-78) 40 lines, except art. 3 (various). Headings in red. Flourished initials in red and blue or, in art. 3, in red, blue, green, and gold. Eighteen illuminated initials, with complete (ff. 7, 117) or partial bar-borders in gold and colours, introduce the principal feasts, etc. Full-page miniature of the Crucifixion on f. 116b. The word ' papa' has been systematically erased throughout, and the two masses to St Thomas of Canterbury (ff. 17b, 169) and the entries relating to him in the Calendar (7 JULY, f. 4; 29 Dec., f. 6b) have been struck through with a pen.
