MATERIALS RELATING TO THE CORNISH LANGUAGE and the Cornish dialect of English, collected by William Pryce, M.D., F.S.A., of Redruth (d. 1790), art. 1 (except for the title on f. 3 and the original entries on ff. 3b-5, which appear to be written by an amanuensis) and art. 2 being autograph. As follows:-
(1) 'An Essay Towards an Alphabetical Etymological Topographical Vocabulary in Comish wherein the signification in English of the Names of Persons Places Towns Fields Rivers Tin and Coppermines are radically explained.' The majority of the entries are mining terms and place-names. Apparently compiled before the composition of Pryce's Mineralogia Cornubiensis, 1778, which contains (pp. 315-331) a very similar vocabulary of mining terms, the explanations in the two vocabularies being frequently identical. Most, but not all, of the place-names appear in the 'Alphabetical List of the Comish British Names of Hundreds, Parishes, and Villages in Cornwall' included in Pryce's Archaeologia Cornu-Britannica, 1790. The sources of the entries are occasionally indicated by abbreviations or initials, e.g. H(als), GW(avas) MS. (perhaps Add. MS. 28554, ff. 79-89b), etc. References to 'my introduction' on ff. 5, 20b, suggest that it was at one time proposed to issue this vocabulary as a separate publication. ff. 3-50.
(2) Poems in the Cornish dialect of English, with notes explaining the dialect words:-(a) 'A Cornish Dialogue Between Grace Penvear and Molly Treviskey.' ff. 51b-53;-(b) 'A Cornish Eclogue between Tom Pengerzick and Dick Trengitha.' ff. 53b-55.
(3) 'The Creation of the World Being A Comish Play or Opera translated into English By John Keigwin of Moushole... 1691....' Fragment of an 18th cent. copy (first page of Cornish text and first page of translation). The play has twice been printed, by Davies Gilbert, with Keigwin's translation, in 1827 and by Whitley Stokes in Transactions of the Philological Society, 1864. Other copies in the Department, also with Keigwin's translation, are in Harley MS. 1867, ff. 2-58b, and Add. MS. 28554, ff. 24b-49. ff. 58b-56b (reversed). Paper; ff. ii+ 58. Folio. XVIII cent. [bef. 1778?]. A folded sheet of paper with the names of various persons in the handwriting of Pryce is ff. i, ii; some of these names appear in the list of 'adventurers' in Mineralogia Cornubiensis, p. 188. Original vellum binding. Presented by Richard Bevan, Esq., L.R.C.P.
