PAPERS AND CORRESPONDENCE OF JOHN BOLTON (d. 1925), F.R.G.S., cartographer, of Stanford's Geographical Establishment, relating to Sir Henry Morton Stanley, G.C.B., the explorer, and Maj.-Gen. Charles George Gordon, C.B.; [1871?] -1909. For maps, mainly by Stanley, from John Bolton's papers see Add. MS. 41259 A-D. A further selection of letters addressed to John Bolton is Add. MS. 46152. Arranged as follows:-
(1) Letters to Bolton from Stanley, partly concerning the preparation of maps for Stanley's Congo and the Founding of its Free State (1885); 1878-1899. Included are a letter (f. 38) to Bolton from Stanley's widow, Dorothy, 1909, and a sketch-map (f. 39) of part of the shore of Lake Tanganyika from Stanley's diary [1871?]. ff. 1-39.
(2) Miscellaneous programmes, menus, etc., relating to functions in Stanley's honour, with some other printed material; 1884-1904. ff. 4o-59.
(3) Memorandum by Gordon, headed 'Expenditure in India', proposing that a select committee of the House of Commons should investigate the possibility of reducing Imperial expenditure in India. Apparently intended to be printed for private circulation (cf. letter in Add. MS. 46152) as in the case
of Gordon's memorandum on the Treaty of San Stefano, also printed by Stanford's; 21, 25 jan. 1881. Autograph. ff. 60-75. Paper; ff. 75. Folio. [1871?]-1909. Presented by R. C. Bolton, Esq., son of John Bolton.
