PATTERN-BOOK FOR EMBROIDERY OR LACE, probably used for the making of children's samplers. The designs, which are represented by dots on squared paper, are mainly geometrical, but include alphabets (ff. 8, 9), numerals (f. 8), crowns (f. 11), a recumbent stag (f. 26), and flowers (ff. 28, 29). A pen-and-ink wash drawing of a flower appears on f. 8b. Paper; ff. 48 (some leaves cut out). Octavo. Early XVIII cent. Leather binding with title 'Virk book' on the spine. Probably originally owned by Catharina Drakenhielm (signatures on ff. 1b, 8b) presumably a Swede. A later hand has written on f. i b the words 'from Blarney Castle Co Cork. 1822', and, perhaps as a donor, the name 'Ann West' on f. 2. A third hand is responsible for the signatures 'Anne West' on ff. 2, 44b (initials on f. 47) and has filled in some blank leaves (ff. 2-7, 44b-48) with verse, copies or parodies of popular songs, and personal memoranda, circ. 1822-1827, the latter recording her arrival in Cork (f. 7), a journey from Bristol (f. 5) and a visit to Limerick (f. 7). Blarney Castle was owned, 18th- 19th centt., by the family of Jefferyes of whom James jefferyes (1650-1740) was British Minister to Sweden 1711-1715. Transferred from the Department of Printed Books, which acquired the volume in 1890.
