AUTOGRAPH COPIES, BY CARL GOTTFRIED WOIDE, D.D., orientalist and Biblical scholar, afterwards Assistant Librarian of the British Museum, of letters, etc., mainly relating to his dispute with J. J. Griesbach regarding the reading of the Greek text of 1 Tim. iii. 16 in the Codices Alexandrinus, Ephraemi rescriptus, and Claromontanus; 1774-1778, n.d. Most of the contents, with some abridgement, are published in J. A. Cramer, Beyträge zur Beförderung theologischer und andrer wichtigen Kenntnisse, iii, 1778, PP. 101-195. Griesbach restated his views, with quotations from the present documents, in his Symbolae criticae ad supplendas et corrigendas variarum N.T. lectionum collectiones, 1785, vol. i, pp. viii-lvi; vol. ii, pp. 56-77. See also Tischendorf, Excursus de I ad Timoth. 111, 16 in Codex Ephraemi Syri, rescriptus, 1843, pp. 39-42; B. H. Cowper, Novum Testamentum ... ex antiquissimo codice Alexandrino, 1860, pp. xvi-xviii; J. W. Burgon, The Revision Revised, i883, PP. 424-501; F. H. Scrivener, A Plain Introduction ... to the New Testament, 4th ed., 1894, ii, PP. 390-395. Other papers and correspon-
dence of Woide are in Add. MSS. 48700-48716. As follows (cf. Woide's table of contents, f.1b):-
(1) Letter from Woide to J. C. Veldhusen; 18 Apr. 1774. Latin. Printed, in German translation, in J. D. Michaelis, Orientalische und exegetische Bibliothek, vii, 1774, pp. 138-141. ff. 2-3 b.
(2) Extract from Griesbach, Novum Testamentum Graece, 1775, vol. ii, pp. ix-x. Latin. ff. 4-5 b.
(3) Letter from Woide to J. C. Veldhusen; 1 Nov. [altered from Oct.] 1776. Latin. Printed, in German translation, and dated 1 Sept. 1776, in Cramer, op. cit., pp. 147-184. ff. 6-33.
(4) Letter to Woide, on the reading in the Codices Ephraemi rescriptus and Claromontanus, both in the Bibliothèque du Roi in Paris; 17 Sept. 1776. French and Latin. Printed with omissions, in Cramer, op. cit., pp. 185-188, where the writer is designated by the initial D, and the date is given as 3 Sept. 1776. ff.34-37.
(5) Letter to Woide, on the same subject; 24 Sept. 1776. French. Printed, with omissions, in Cramer, op. cit., pp. 188- 195, where the writer is designated by the initial P (conjectured by Griesbach, Symbolae criticae, vol. i, p. xix, to be Nicholas Parquoi, of the Bibliothèque du Roi, Paris).
(6) Woide, De Correctionibus Codicis Alexandrini; n.d. Latin. Printed, in German translation, in Cramer, op. cit., pp. 101-146. The manner in which this is combined in Woide's table of contents with item 3 above suggests that it may have been addressed to J. C. Veldhusen and have accompanied the letter in question. Paper; ff. 70. Quarto. 1774-1776. Presented by A. M. Goodhart, Esq.
