PAPERS AND CORRESPONDENCE OF THOMAS SHARP, antiquary (b. 1770, d. 1841), chiefly relating to the Coventry Mystery plays; put together in a bound volume after his death by his son-in-law, Thomas Dyer Edwardes (cf. note on f. 221). Other papers of Sharp are now in Add. MS. 44932, but the bulk of his collection of Warwickshire MSS. was destroyed in the fire at the Birmingham Free Reference Library in 1879. Cf. Brit. Mus. Quart., viii, 1933-1934, pp. 98-100. As follows:-
(1) Printed page-proofs of A Dissertation on the Pageants or Dramatic Mysteries anciently performed at Coventry, as published by Sharp at Coventry in 1825, except that the Index was subsequently revised. The proofs contain annotations and corrections by Sharp (passim), Francis Douce (ff. 10-160b, passim) and Dawson Tumer (f. 12b). Bound up with the work are proofcopies of various states of David Jee's engrNaved illustrations, additional drawings, engravings, miscellaneous MS. material relating to the Coventry plays, including transcripts by Sharp and James Heywood Markland, and some printed articles and reviews of the Dissertation. The following original documents are included:-(a) Extract, in the hand of Sir W. Dugdale, 'Ex catalogo Maiorum Coventrie in rotulo penes Ric: Butler de Coventre', recording that at Corpus Christi'A 3 [sic] R. 3'Richard III'came to Coventre and saw ye play'. f. II.;-(b) Petition of Thomas Massie, manager of pageants at Coventry, to the Mayor asking for settlement of his grievances (see Sharp, op. cit., pp. 75-76); circ. 1612. Imperfect. f. 86;-(c) 'Certain Perticulers of Thomas Massie his ill demeanor towardes Mr Richard Page then Maior, Mr Roger Clark and others truly recorded'; circ. 1610 Cf. Sharp, op. cit., PP. 76-77. If. 88-88 b;-(d) 'For the Waites', printed in full by Sharp, op. cit., p. 211; early 17th cent. f. 166b. ff. 1-220b.
(2) Correspondence, etc., with F. Douce, Dawson Turner, Robert Pitcairn, and others, relating chiefly to the above; 1808-1831. At ff. 346, 348 are two letters of Sir Walter Scott (7 Mar., 7 Sept. 1826) regarding folk-plays in Scotland. Arranged by writers (not in alphabetical order), whose names will be found in the Index to this Catalogue. ff. 221-384. Paper; ff. ii+384. Quarto. xvii-xix centt. Bookplate of Thomas Sharp at f. ii; below is written 'No 88 T.S.' Cf. similar bookplates in Add. MSS. 6280 (endorsed 'No. 106 T.S.') and 10036 ('No. 1'). Binding of dark green morocco, gilt-tooled.
